Killicomaine U13s 14 Down High Under 13s 21
Down High Under 13s got their first victory of the season with a hard fought victory away to Killicomaine. The early morning brightness gave way to heavy rain just as the game started. Unlike last week, Down came out of the blocks fast and soon after Rhodri Phillips had knocked the ball on over the line the same player did manage to touch down and then convert his own try. Any thoughts that the game would be easy were dispelled as the home side made their way into the Down 22 and levelled things soon after with a converted try. Down wasted a couple of opportunities late in the half to go back into the lead as the weather made handling difficult. The halftime score was 7-7.
The second half started similar to the first with Phillips finishing off a nice move called by out half Tom Crudgington. The conversion was good. Credit to Killicomaine who straight from the kick off took advantage of a Down knock on and their number 8 picked up from the back of the scrum to restore parity. The next score turned out to be decisive and it was that man Phillips who crashed over for another converted try. Down had further chances to seal the victory and in the final few minutes they defended well to thwart any Killicomaine attacks.
Notable performances from Reuben Smyth whose lineout throwing to Adam Colgan was consistent. There was some strong running from Patrick Coulter and Adam Jackson in the backs.
