Bangor Grammar U13s 41 Down High U13s 15
Down High Under 13s first game of the season resulted in a defeat away to Bangor Grammar. The boys in green started brightly retaining possession from the kick off but naivety in defence allowed the Bangor winger to run down the blindside unopposed to score the first try. This affected Down and two more quick tries followed before they decided to show what they can do in attack. Pressure on the Bangor line eventually told when James Douglas scored an unconverted try. Unfortunately Down couldn't hold out to half time and Bangor added to their tally to lead 22-5 at the break.
The second half started well for Down with number 8 Joe Charles scoring after a fine pick up at the back of the scrum but any hope of a comeback were scuppered as Bangor exploited the narrow Down defence to score two converted tries. Credit to the Mount Crescent team as they stuck at their task and were rewarded with another unconverted try from Charles. The home side had the last word with a final unconverted try.
There was a number of impressive performances including Niall Cockfield in the front row and Charles' back row partners Stephen Campbell and Matthew Edgar. The half back partnership of Josh Keys and Yanni Kiekkas showed they have potential too.
