Down High 29 Killicomaine 0
Saturday morning saw Down High School Under 13s, missing a few players, welcome Killicomaine to the frosty pitches of Down. Down High were fast out of the blocks. With great rucking and some quick hands they made camp into the opposition’s twenty-two. Good ground was then made by Alexander Martin which gave Down the first real chance and Jack Carlisle took it to cross the line. Robin Wilson failed with the conversion. The restart was caught and after a few good phases of the ball being played wide to Rhys Patterson and William Browne, Down found themselves in the opposition's twenty-two yet again. The forwards dominated once more setting themselves up only 5 metres out. Dan Browne saw a gap open in the defence and he sneaked over the line to make it 10-0. Credit must go to Killicomaine for their sterling defence but they weren’t showing any sign of attack.
A decent kick started the second half, where a clean take was made by Killicomaine. After a few scrums, Carlisle came on to the ball at pace to cross the line for his second try. This time the conversion was added. Killicomaine then made their first real attack, but strong defence and rucking saw prop Michael Donaldson released with his pace to make lots of ground. Great hands from a strong back line saw Down capitalise on their field position where man of the match Wilson, with a classic dummy and step crossed the line for the fourth try. The conversion was successful. A rather subdued Killicomaine made the most of a few key Down players being substituted. The visitors were edging closer to the line after an endless run of line outs and scrums, but the Down forwards cut out their mistakes and the clearance kick was finally made. Down had the last word, when quick hands out wide sent Rhys Patterson over in the corner. This was a solid performance on a damp, cold morning, from a slightly weakened Down side but sustaining their impressive form with now 10 wins out of 11.
