Down High U13s 47-7 Clounagh
Down High Under 13s made the journey to mid Ulster on Saturday to tkake on Clounagh Junior High School. As they haven’t played this school before we were unaware of their ability in rugby and that was stirring up nerves for some of the team. Clounagh had quite a big pack of forwards who from the start were very good in the rucks and Down’s forwards knew they had a battle on their hands. The first try came when Down forwards managed to steal the ball off Clounagh and passed it down the line to Rhys Patterson who sprinted past all their players and scored under the posts. This was converted by Robin Wilson. Rhys tried this tactic again and succeeded, only to dive past the dead ball line, which brought a scrum to Clounagh. Although that happened, he scored 2 tries after Harris McConnell who ran past their defence on the blind side. That brought the score to 28-0 at half time.
Down started the second half with most of the subs on and they still kept their attacking backline. They scored 3 more tries in which 2 of them were big runs by Ronan Patterson and one was when Harris broke through their defensive line and ran most of the pitch. Just as he was tackled a bit before the line, he passed the ball to Daniel Millington who finished off the try. Although we didn’t get the conversion after Ronan scored his first try, we were still 47-0 up with only a few minutes to go. Just in the last play of the game, Clounagh pushed us back onto our try line and their second row charged through and scored leaving the end result of the match was 47-7.
Down players stood up to the physical aspect of the game and special mention goes to Nicholas Cleave and Robin Wilson who were jointly awarded Man of the Match.
