Being the home team, Down were keen to put in another great performance to keep their impressive record going.
It started well, with an outstanding kick-off from No.10 Robin Wilson to give the home side great field position. After several phases of the away team unsuccessfully attempting to breach the home defence, the Down High forwards showed amazing team strength in managing to turn over the ball over in the Dromore twenty-two. This proved fatal for the away side as some very slick hands lead to Harris McConnell diving over in the corner. Wilson was unable to add the extras. The score board read 5-0.
Callum Dunn successfully caught the restart and made good yards to provide fast ball for the backs to show there superior skill and pace. McConnell cutting a great line. Gaining vital metres for the boys in green.
Several minutes later Down found themselves yet again in the Dromore twenty-two allowing them to put enormous pressure on the away defence. Down played extremely smart rugby using big forwards such as Ronan Patterson and Ben Keown to carry hard and suck in the opposition defence leaving room for Rhys Patterson to power over in the corner with some great fends. Again Wilson was unable to convert. Half Time 10-0.
Another superb take from the restart from Dunn build a good attacking platform for the dominant Down High backs. Many phrases later Down were back into the Dromore’s twenty two and stayed there for a considerable amount of time.
Dromore knocked the ball on allowing Down to capitalise from the following scrum . Flanker, Ronan Patterson moved into no.8. From this position he was able to produce a wondrous try by picking and putting a perfecting weighted chip over the heads of the opposition. After chasing the ball, showing blistering pace to get to the ball just before the Dromore fullback and dive over for an amazing solo try. The tricky conversion was unsuccessful.
After a clean catch from the restart, something Down had failed to achieve so many times already this season, Wilson put in a great kick to put pressure on the defending teams linout. After managing to steal the opposition ball, Wilson saw space on the far side. The ball was effectively shipped across the backline into the hands of Ronan Patterson who was more than able to beat the last defender and set the ball down with a clean pair of heels. Again the conversion was unsuccessful.
This leaves the score board 20-0 to the boys in green. Down High come away with yet another solid performance. Standout players included; Robin Wilson, Dan Browne and Nicholas Cleave.
