Down High School hosted six schools at their annual U12 Rugby Tournament on Friday past and it was the home side that won the overall shield for only the second time in the competition's history. Down High defeated Banbridge Academy 5-0 in their first pool game and lost 17-12 to Royal School Armagh in an entertaining second pool game. This left them as runners up in the group and in a semi final against Grosvenor who had won the other pool. The local side emerged as 17-5 winners in this semi final, setting up a final against Belfast Royal Academy who defeated RS Armagh in the other semi-final. The final was a tense affair with Down High scoring a converted try early in the first half but BRA scoring an unconverted try shortly afterwards. In the final few moments Down were under a lot of pressure as BRA were camped on their line but the green defence held firm and the final whistle was greeted with elation. Banbridge Academy won the trophy competition beating Regent House in their final.
