Down High Medallion 26-10 Grosvenor Medallion
Down High's Medallion rugby squad were at home to Grosvenor Grammar School on Saturday morning. They got off to a good start scoring all their four tries in the first half. The opening try, scored by Sam Lecky, came as a result of quick ball from Ewan Keers to Aaron Chambers who then released the speedy winger to touch down under the posts. Charlie Power easily converted the try bringing the score to 7-0. This was then followed by a Harry McCormick score who used his sheer power, size and determination to power over their inside centre and touched it down under the posts. Again Charlie converted the score. After good pressure from the kick off, Ewan Keers used his quick feet to run past two players and score another try from a ruck set up by the forwards. Charlie missed this conversion by a slim margin bringing the score to 19-0. To bring the half to an end, the skipper, William Martin scored another try under the sticks. Charlie again converted this bringing to score to 26-0 at half time.
Grosvenor kicked the ball into deep Down High territory to start the second half which gave them early pressure against the men in green. Eventually this led to a well earned try by one of their props, their kicker missed the resultant conversion, bringing the score to 26-5. After more consistent pressure Grosvenor broke through the line and scored a second try, which the kicker again missed, the score now 26-10. After strong defence against a very physical side, they broke the line again but thanks to the fly- half, Charlie Power and substitute Tom Martin, the try was held up. After even more consistent pressure the Grosvenor skipper broke the line again but fortunately for the boys in green, the ball was dropped over the try line. Speedy winger Sam Lecky took quick advantage of this and picked it up, running the length of the pitch only to drop the ball over the line, much to his and Down High's embarassment. The boys will be happy with their attacking display in the first half and worked relatively hard in defence in the second half however there is still plenty of room for improvement in the coming months.
Man of the match, James McBride
