Down High Medallion 35-5 Bangor Grammar
Down High had played Bangor previously this season and lost by a narrow margin of 3 points. The result on Saturday showed how much the medallion team has come since the start of the year.
The first five minutes were very sloppy on Down's part, once again not gathering the restart and giving Bangor the chance to attack, however good work from Robbie Stewart and Reuben Ashe kept them at bay. Then the home side began control the game, Charlie Power used Sam Leckey and John Hyndman to good effect and the latter managed to get Down High's first try of the game, the kick was successful. After this opening score Down kept up the intensity and the pressure told, excellent work from the forwards and scrum half Ewan Keers kept the pack rumbling forward, as a result, skipper William Martin forced his way over, the conversion was added.
Bangor were struggling to get out of their own 22", numerous charge downs were causing trouble in their defence. Second Row Michael Reynolds took full advantage of their uncertainty, managing to quickly steal the ball from an isolated winger. Ewan Keers quickly fed James McBride who touched down for the 3rd try of the match. Again, the conversion was successful. Although a good half for the home side, they would have been slightly disappointed with only a 21 point lead.
A lowlight of Down High's performances this year has been slacking off in the second half, and this match was no different as they allowed Bangor to press forward and score a very soft try. The away side's pressure didn't stop, although good defence from Aaron Chambers and Alex Martin at the breakdown ensured a penalty and gave Down High a chance to push themselves up the pitch. The lineout was stolen, but Bangor's out-half was once again charged down by Power, who hacked the ball through for a score underneath the posts, he converted his own try.
William Martin finished the game off very well for DHS, very good link up play between the backs and forwards allowed Andrew Fraser to find a gap in the defence, he offloaded to Martin, who scored in the corner, the tough kick was added to round off a very accomplished performance from Down High.
