Down High Medallion XV were hosted by Wellington on Tuesday afternoon. The game started with some mistakes from both sides but eventually Down High got the advantage with a loose ball out of a ruck which Aaron Chambers gathered before scoring under the posts, leaving a trail of Wellington players in his wake. Power kicked the easy conversion to give Down High a 7-0 lead.
Shortly after, a well performed set piece move of a scrum sent John Hyndman through a gap and with no No.15 in sight he had an easy run under the posts. Again Power added the extras to put Down High 14-0 up.
Just before half time a mistake by Wellington from the scrum sent the ball hurtling past the scrum-half. Ewan Keers took advantage and dived over the line for a well deserved try putting Down High 19-0 up going into half-time.
Down High had a scrappy start to the second half and were punished by Wellington who parked their bus on the 5metre line for a good ten minutes. However the Down defence was solid with some great tackles from Reynolds, Morrison, McBride and Graham. Eventually the visitors stole the ball back with Harry McCormick and Andrew Heenan gaining some precious yards. Peter Davidson raced to the breakdown getting the ball out as quickly as possible to send Frazer over for a try between the posts for Down High’s fourth try of the game. Power added the conversion to put Down High 26-0 up.
Down High responded well from the restart putting in some excellent runs from which Michael Reynolds got a well deserved try from and with Power adding the conversion Down High extended their lead to 33-0.
In the last play of the game super-sub William Martin ran down the line to take the ball from winger Phillip Smyth to score his umpteenth try of the season. Power added a very easy kick to give Down High a 40-0 victory.
