On Saturday morning the Medallion XV hosted visitors Sullivan Upper, a very strong side who the previous week had beaten Methody.
The game started with Down High receiving the ball but that didn’t last for long as Sullivan turned over ball and with some very quick hands from the backs scored the first try of the game. The conversion dropped short and this left the score at 5-0 to the visitors.
Down High responded well from the restart with the forwards pressuring the Sullivan defence and getting a penalty on the 22 metre line. A good kick from Charlie Power put the score to 3-5.
Down High received the ball from the restart and worked hard to get up to Sullivan 22, where Harry McCormick broke through the defence and popped the ball off to William Martin who ploughed through the No.15 for a well earned try. Power again slotted it over to put Down High 10-5 up. Power slotted another penalty between the sticks to make it 13-5 at half-time.
The second-half started with some missed tackles from the Down High side and Sullivan going in for their second try of the game to make it 13-10. A costly mistake from Down High saw the speedy Sullivan winger going in for another try which the fly-half converted putting the score at 17-13.
Near the end of the match Down High got another penalty which Power converted easily to leave the score at 16-17 to the visitors. Sullivan nearly scored another try but adrenaline kept the Down High team going until the final whistle.
Special Thanks to Mr Carson and Mr Irvine for their commitment in coaching us.
