Online shop open again
For a limited time only, there is an opportunity for students involved in rugby at Down High to purchase a number of items via an online shop hosted by our kit providers, Kukri. The items that are available will come in very useful during the winter when conditions can be very cold and wet. There is an opportunity to buy a wet weather spray top and/or a blast fleece. The fleeces are only for Medallion and Senior students. Mr Knox has some samples in school to give students an idea of what these items will be like.
Items can be viewed and purchased at the following link:
The shop closes midnight on Thursday 6th July.
Down High gets it's first Lion
All at Down High School were delighted when Tommy Seymour was named on the British and Irish Lions panel to tour New Zealand in June/July 2017. Tommy is well known to all connected with Down High rugby. He started playing the game in school before progressing through the ranks of under-age representative teams during his time here. After leaving school he played for Ulster Rugby before moving to Glasgow Warriors where his professional career really took off. For some time now he has consistently put in notable performances for his adopted country, Scotland. Being named on the Lions panel is a huge honour and all associated with Down High rugby congratulate Tommy on this achievement.
Mr Carson Picks up Refereeing Award
Down High School former pupil and current Medallion rugby coach, Mr Dan Carson, picked up Ulster Rugby's 'Referee of the Year' trophy at their awards evening held in the Culloden Hotel on Thursday past. Having refereed many school boy games involving Down High over the years, Dan took the step into officiating adult games across Ulster two years ago. His receipt of this reward is recognition of his rapid progress up through the refereeing ranks in the province. Indeed, having just completed the inter provincial refereeing scheme he will take charge of All Ireland League matches from next season onwards. Well done Mr Carson
Mr Cairns is capped for Ireland 7s
A big congratulations goes to former Down High student and current senior strength and conditioning coach, Mr Cairns who has recently played for the Ireland 7s team at a number of big tournaments. Mr Cairns who plays his 15 a side rugby for Ballynahinch RFC, made his way through a rigorous selection process to get onto the Irish 7's squad and since his selection he has enjoyed successful tournaments in Scotland, Bosnia and Croatia. Mr Cairns is joined on the squad by Mr McGuigan who was a placement student in the Down High PE department during the 2013-14 school year.
The long term aim for the squad is to reach the Olympic finals in Rio 2016. Everyone at Down will be keeping their eye on the squad's progress and wishing them all the best.
